TOTE Maritime is leading the industry in environmental initiatives – it is an essential part of how we do business.
Exceeding ECA Standards
The International Maritime Organization designated the coastlines of North America as an Emission Control Area in 2010, imposing new emissions standards on the shipping industry. Rather than doing the bare minimum to meet the new standards, TOTE Maritime saw this as an opportunity to lead the industry by investing in liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine technology for its fleet.
Introducing the World’s First LNG-powered Containerships
Later this year, TOTE Maritime will introduce the first of two LNG-powered containerships to the Puerto Rico trade. These Marlin-class vessels will be the most advanced, environmentally responsible vessels of their kind – reducing particulate matter by 99%, vessel sulfur emissions by 98%, and nitrogen oxides by 91%.
Both vessels will greatly surpass the standards put in place by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s clean air regulations while helping to provide safe, reliable cargo deliveries that keep communities moving in Puerto Rico.
