TOTE Maritime Alaska was recently announced by The Northwest Seaport Alliance as the winner of the 2019 North Star Award for Environmental Stewardship for its efforts to convert its fleet of ORCA Class vessels from conventional diesel fuel to liquified natural gas (LNG), the cleanest burning shipping fuel on the market. This annual award recognizes businesses that promote environmental sustainability and demonstrate a commitment to the natural environment.
“It is an honor
to receive the Environmental Stewardship Award from The Northwest Seaport
Alliance,” said TOTE Maritime Alaska President Grace Greene. “While we knew it
was going to be a long road to convert these vessels to a cleaner source of
fuel, we always knew it was the right decision based on the environmental and
efficiency benefits that this initiative will create.”
According to The Northwest
Seaport Alliance, the North Star Awards attracted 17 nominations
from companies and organizations for outstanding achievements and contributions
to the economic and environmental vitality of the region.
“This recognition is meaningful because our goal is always to be good stewards – for our industry, for our communities, and for our planet,” said Greene. “We are grateful to our customers and our partners who have supported us along the way.”
Conversion of TOTE Maritime Alaska’s ORCA Class vessel, the North Star, is expected to be complete by Q1 2021, while the company’s second vessel, the Midnight Sun, is scheduled to be converted by Q1 2022.

In honor of Earth Day, TOTE Maritime Alaska employees celebrated with a volunteer cleanup event at Port of Tacoma. Volunteers spent their morning picking up litter and debris along the road and exterior of the terminal.
Paul Vierela, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Specialist, coordinated the annual event. With Safety as a top priority, team members went out in groups of 2-4 and collected over 15 garbage bags of trash from the side of the road and along the railroad tracks.
Following the cleanup, TOTE Maritime Alaska hosted a BBQ for volunteers and operations partners at the Terminal office.
“Cleaning up at the terminal for Earth Day is something I enjoy and try to do every year as a way to contribute to a better environment. This year, I got to do it with my team which was a great team bonding experience!” said Candace Smith, Invoicing Supervisor for TOTE Maritime Alaska.
As of Monday (4/1/2019), the West Coast (PADD5) Diesel Fuel Price as published by the U.S. Dept. of Energy is $3.541 per gallon (please refer the following link: (https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/). This price level corresponds with an inland/arbitrary fuel surcharge of 29.5% as published in tariff STB TOTE 101-A and TOCT 402-A per Item 346.
Therefore, effective April 14, 2019 the inland/arbitrary fuel
