World Maritime Day 2019 - Celebrating Women in Maritime

The United Nations (UN) through the International Maritime Organization (IMO), created World Maritime Day in 1978 to celebrate the international maritime industry’s contribution towards the world’s economy, especially in shipping. The date varies by year and country, but it is always in the last week of September.

This year, World Maritime Day which fell on September 26, is dedicated to empowering women in Maritime. From the President of TOTE Maritime Alaska, Grace Greene, to TOTE Services crewing specialist Emily Black, women are vital to TOTE's success. We want to thank all the women both afloat and ashore who are part of Team TOTE, it is an honor to have you on our crew.

TOTE is part of the Saltchuk family of companies. Saltchuk is proud to be a privately-held, family-owned business whose majority shareholders are two sisters. The sisters are actively engaged on the professional board that guides and directs the company. In a letter on the Saltchuk website the sisters state: “Our companies are often referred to as asset-intensive because of the specialized equipment they use. But our most valuable asset is not a truck, tugboat, airplane or a ship–it’s the people who work throughout our family of companies. We value the contribution of every employee and are always seeking to grow our teams with people who share our values and take pride in the work they do.

Our values are key to our success and unite our operations under the same mission:

  • Safety, so that every one of our employees returns home to their families each night.
  • Reliability, because our companies provide essential services to some of the most remote communities in the country.
  • Commitment, which encompasses our promise to make a difference and contribute to the long-term success of our people and the communities and environments in which we work.

As a family business, we have challenged ourselves to pass Saltchuk on to our own children in even better shape than when we took on ownership."

From all of us at TOTE, we celebrate the women leading and supporting our business, happy World Maritime Day!

Get ready for Flu Season

The Influenza virus typically spreads in the United States annually, from late fall through early spring. The flu virus can cause serious illness and death, particularly among older adults, very young children, pregnant women, and those with chronic medical conditions. The CDC recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against the flu.

• Annual flu vaccination is recommended for all persons aged 6 months and older.

• It is recommended NOT to use nasal spray flu vaccine; only get an injectable flu shot

• Children aged 6 months through 8 years require 2 doses (administered 28 days apart).

• Ensure your vaccine is administered when there is no sign of cold or flu-like symptoms.
